Genesis 24:1-9

Genesis 24: A beautiful love story.

Abraham knew God kept His promises.

We have to trust God and follow Him. He has a plan.

Institutions: 1) Marriage and 2) Government.

God dedicated Genesis 24 to marriage.

Isaac is a type of the Lord Jesus Christ.

The death of Sarah is a picture of Israel.

Abraham is a picture of God the Father.

The servant is a picture of the Holy Spirit.

Commentary of Abraham’s life: Genesis 24:1: And Abraham was old, and well stricken in age: and the Lord had blessed Abraham in all things.

Abraham’s commission: Genesis 24, And Abraham said unto his eldest servant of his house, that ruled over all that he had, Put, I pray thee, thy hand under my thigh: And I will make thee swear by the Lord, the God of heaven, and the God of the earth, that thou shalt not take a wife unto my son of the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I dwell: But thou shalt go unto my country, and to my kindred, and take a wife unto my son Isaac.

The oath: No Canaanite woman because they were wicked. Genesis 24, And I will make thee swear by the Lord, the God of heaven, and the God of the earth, that thou shalt not take a wife unto my son of the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I dwell.

The servant was supposed to take a wife for Isaac from Israel. (Genesis 2, But thou shalt go unto my country, and to my kindred, and take a wife unto my son Isaac).

We are not to be unequally yoked. We must want God’s will for our lives.

2 Corinthians 6, 14 Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?

1 Corinthians 6, 19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? 20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.

A question: Genesis 24, And the servant said unto him, Peradventure the woman will not be willing to follow me unto this land: must I needs bring thy son again unto the land from whence thou camest?

Abraham’s caution: Genesis 24, And Abraham said unto him, Beware thou that thou bring not my son thither again.

Abraham’s servant asked a question and got his instructions. He was not to take Isaac back there.

Isaac never once left the Promised Land.

1 Thessalonians 4, 13 But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. 14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him. 15 For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep. 16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: 17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. 18 Wherefore comfort one another with these words.

Abraham knew that He gave his servant a difficult task. The servant had a 500-mile journey.

God has been faithful and will continue to be faithful.

To be faithful is to be obedient--His will and not our will.

Proverbs 3, Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

The servant is faithful: Genesis 24, And the servant put his hand under the thigh of Abraham his master, and sware to him concerning that matter.
